A car rated for 300 miles might show you 180 on a brutally cold interstate run. That’s the honest bad news. Do the math and that’s roughly 210 miles from a full charge on a cold highway, down from the summer figure. The 2.1 miles per 1% rule is a genuinely useful backstop for interstate trips. When the trip planner and your gut disagree, plan to the more cautious number and you’ll rarely get burned.

Why short trips feel so much worse

Here’s the part new owners underestimate. A 12 mile commute in single-digit weather can post a range-loss figure that looks alarming, because the car spends the whole drive heating a cold cabin and a cold battery and never gets to steady state. Stretch that same day into a 90 mile drive and the average looks far better. If your winter is mostly short hops, budget for the worst case and charge more often.
